Menurut Soemarwoto, pemanasan global adalah naiknya suhu permukaan bumi karena
naiknya intensitas efek rumah kaca (ERK). Sedangkan, efek rumah kaca adalah
suatu proses dimana radiasi yang dipancarkan oleh matahari ke bumi dan
dipancarkan kembali oleh bumi, namun terserap oleh gas tertentu sehingga pada
dasarnya ERK berfungsi menjaga suhu bumi agar tetap hangat. Kaitannya dengan
pengertian pemanasan global adalah karena meningkatnya aktivitas manusia yang
menghasilkan berbagai partikel dan gas-gas yang terbuang secara bebas, telah
memicu naiknya suhu bumi.
